STCW BASIC SAFETY TRAINING

Overview

A valid STCW Basic Safety Training certificate is a required for most employees working onboard cruise ships. Whilst some cruise liners may provide STCW training to their new recruits after they join, many job seekers a required to hold a valid STCW certificate before they are apply to start their new job onboard. Having the certificate in hand will most certainly put you ahead of your competitors in the recruitment process.

STCW Basic Training Course

The STCW Basic Training Course runs every week and the minimum legal requirement for all crew working commercially at sea. Our courses are accredited by SAMSA (South African Maritime Safety Authority) and recognised by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) and are valid for a period of 5 years.

The Basic Safety Training Courses include:

 

  • Fire Fighting an Fire Prevention
  • Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities (PSSR)
  • Personal Sea Survival (PST)
  • Elementary First Aid

The modules that are required differ slightly between cruise ships, Superyachts and offshore.

To work on a Cruise Ships, the course can take between 9 to 11 days to complete and is made-up of the basic modules, plus some additional training depending on your department:

  • Fire Fighting an Fire Prevention
  • Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities (PSSR)
  • Personal Sea Survival (PST)
  • Elementary First Aid
  • Proficiency in Designated Security Duties (PDSD)
  • Crowd Management & Passenger Safety (CMPS)
  • Crisis Management And Human Behaviour (CMHB)
  • Proficiency in Security Awareness (PSA)

Pre-requisite Experience and Qualifications

Students must be 18 years or older.

Fire Fighting and Personal Survival are physically demanding and require a basic level of fitness.

For successful completion, 100% attendance is required and students are expected to actively participate in all elements of the course.
